Levitating Black Guy

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Levitating Black Guy

What this meme means

A school photo shows two people in a corridor: one has lifted off the floor in the background, while the other moves toward the camera. In memes, this strange fraction of a second turns a jump into a chase and a run into a comic rescue.

Frame from a school assignment

Jordan Tuvi said the photo was taken in the winter of 2016 for a photography assignment: he and two classmates tried different versions of the scene. According to him, their friend Kal shot this exact frame. The original post was not captioned, so the photographer's name is known only from Tuvi's recollection.

In the frame itself, the distant figure seems suspended beneath the ceiling, while a blurred figure closer to the camera crosses the corridor. The checkered floor, the even row of lights and the ordinary school walls make the jump look even less like a trick: the space is mundane, and the movement seems to break its rules. Neither face nor clothing is needed to grasp the visual joke.

From the picture to an online chase

The photo was made long before it spread online. The earliest surviving trace on Reddit is dated April 5, 2018; a few days later, a similar image was being discussed in communities with references to the SCP Foundation. These are early known posts, but not an established first post. In July of that year, the caption “Floating Boy Chasing Running Boy” was already turning the composition into a format name.

The title offers a story that the frame itself does not tell: who is chasing whom and why. In reality, the viewer sees only two unsynchronized movements. One silhouette looks motionless because of the captured phase of the jump, while the second is smeared by motion; the mind connects these details into a chase and assigns the roles itself.

Later, Tuvi recalled that friends sent him various captions for the photo; several people sent the meme almost simultaneously. For the participants, this became an unexpected continuation of the assignment rather than a deliberately planned internet post.

How a motionless moment works

In an ordinary photo, a jump is read quickly as up-and-down motion. Here, the figure in the background stands so evenly that it looks hovering, while the blurred person in front seems already engaged in action. The contrast between stillness and haste creates a sense of an unequal fight, even though the frame contains no blow and no contact between the people.

The joke rests on a mismatch of two speeds: the still figure seems to have already caught its target, although the blurred one is still moving. A caption can assign unexpected roles to this chase: for example, not a person and a pursuer, but a duty and the only free evening. Then the measured geometry of the corridor becomes the stage for a disproportionately important conflict that the viewer builds out on their own.

Invented captions

“Alarm set for 7:00” — “me, who set four more snoozes.” This is an invented pair: the jump becomes the push of the morning, and the smeared figure is an attempt to win a few minutes.

“Last free seat on the bus” — “the person who spotted it from the other end of the stop.” This is also an invented variant: both figures take roles in a race, although the picture itself says nothing about it.
