Kinsey Wolanski in a Swimsuit

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Kinsey Wolanski in a Swimsuit

What this meme means

The meme is tied to a real episode at the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid, when model Kinsey Wolanski, wearing a black one-piece swimsuit with an advertising slogan, ran onto the pitch. The footage of her detention and her appearance on the grass spread across social networks and turned into a meme about sudden, flashy intrusions that pull all the attention onto the intruder.

What is happening in the photo

The shot shows stadium stands full of spectators and the tournament trophy on a pedestal on the right. In the center is a light-haired woman in a black one-piece swimsuit with text on its side; a man in a dark suit holds her by the shoulder, and several other people in uniforms and plain clothes stand nearby. The scene was clearly shot at a large stadium during an official ceremony: the trophy, the players’ kit in the background, and the presence of organizers in suits all point to this.

Origin: the 2019 Champions League final

On June 1, 2019, the UEFA Champions League final between Liverpool and Tottenham was held at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid. During the match, a woman in a black swimsuit with the inscription “vitaly.uncensored” ran onto the pitch. That was the name of a YouTube channel and app belonging to American vlogger Vitaly Zdorovetskiy. The run onto the field was made by model and Instagram blogger Kinsey Wolanski, who was then his girlfriend.

Stadium security quickly detained her and escorted her off the pitch. The incident was broadcast live to tens of millions of viewers around the world and then spread in photos and videos across social networks.

How it became a meme

The episode was discussed less for the act of running onto the pitch itself, since such stunts had happened before, than for the contrast between the seriousness of the event (the final of the world’s biggest club tournament) and the sudden, deliberately promotional intrusion. The footage of security and stadium officials trying to discreetly lead the detained woman past the tournament trophy became a symbol of a situation where one person grabs all the attention with a single action, distracting from the main event.

After the match, Kinsey Wolanski’s Instagram account gained several million followers within days. That became a talking point in its own right and further cemented the episode in internet culture as an example of instant viral fame.

How the meme is used

Clips of the run and the detention are used to illustrate a situation where someone or something unexpectedly and flashily barges into an important process and draws attention away from it. Captions may play on the gap between plans and reality, such as “When I was preparing for an important presentation and a colleague walked in with a cake” or “My face when I got caught right when the plan was almost working,” the latter applied to the detention footage.

The meme also serves as a metaphor for a “dramatic off-script entrance,” applied to any situation where someone bursts into a carefully planned event and takes over the room’s attention.

What became of the story

After the Champions League final, Kinsey Wolanski continued her Instagram blog, while the media treated the stunt as an advertising campaign for Vitaly Zdorovetskiy’s app. Over the years the episode has become one of the most recognizable examples of sports pitch invasions of the 2010s, alongside other similar cases, and it periodically resurfaces in compilations of memorable football final moments.
