Coffee Cup in “Game of Thrones”

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Coffee Cup in “Game of Thrones”

What this meme means

A white cup with a lid sits on the table next to Daenerys Targaryen in a feast scene from the eighth season of Game of Thrones. Viewers noticed the out-of-place object, HBO acknowledged the error with a joke about herbal tea, and then digitally removed the cup from the episode.

A frame in a dim hall

The scene is shot in a dark room with stone walls and warm light. On the left, the edge of a figure in checked clothing is blurred; in the foreground at the bottom, a dark bowl is visible. The heroine, with long light braided hair, sits in a dark burgundy garment and holds a dark mug. Next to her on the table stands a white cup with a lid, which looks like paper or plastic.

This detail doesn’t look like part of the set: it is a cup of modern type, and in a medieval hall it immediately catches the eye. The frame is dark, so you don’t notice the object at once, but after the first look you can’t help seeing it. This contrast became the basis of the meme.

The episode where it happened

The scene comes from the fourth episode of the eighth season, “The Last of the Starks,” which aired on May 5, 2019. The episode was directed by David Nutter. The action takes place at Winterfell after the battle with the army of the dead, during a victory feast in the great hall. The cup appears shortly before the 17:40 mark and stays in the frame long enough for millions of viewers to notice it.

Viewers picked apart every fragment of the episode, and the object on the table became the main topic of discussion rather than the plot of the scene. On Twitter people joked that a “Starkbucks” had appeared in Westeros, and the hashtags quickly trended.

HBO’s response and the digital fix

On May 6, 2019, HBO issued a statement with a joke: a latte had appeared in the episode by mistake, and Daenerys had ordered herbal tea. The statement was not an attempt to excuse the error; it was more of an acknowledgment with humor, which softened the reaction.

The next day it became known that the cup had been removed from the version of the episode on HBO’s streaming services. A channel representative confirmed that future screenings would use the corrected version. The original broadcast frame with the extra object, however, survived online, and it is that frame that circulates as the template.

Whose cup it was and why it was debated

Viewers immediately assumed it was a cup from a well-known coffee chain. According to Variety, the object had in fact come from the crew’s break area on set and had been left behind at Winterfell. The series’ art director, Hauke Richter, told the outlet that the fuss over the cup was out of proportion, because such anachronisms sometimes happen on shoots; it was just that it had never happened with Game of Thrones before.

The debate matters for the meme: the jokes were built not on the brand but on the fact of the mismatch. Once the object turns out to be an accident, what’s funny is that the mistake made it into one of the most discussed episodes, not the company itself.

Examples of captions and why they work

Captions usually parody the official response or move the scene into a different context.

“Ordered herbal tea, just as promised.” The caption repeats the logic of HBO’s statement and flips it: the heroine is calm, while the drink raises questions. The laugh comes from knowing the backstory.

“Medieval times: dragons, armies, and yet the lattes have already been delivered.” The fantasy world and the modern cup become the main contradiction. The list at the start sets a serious tone, and the last item undercuts it.

“When the boss asks why you’re late, and you’re already holding a coffee to go.” An everyday scene is transferred into the plot of the series. The recognizability of the situation makes the caption understandable without explanation.
