What is in the picture
The image has three parts. On the left, the largest, stands a man in a white T-shirt, his face only partly visible. He hugs a chocolate-colored puppy with a blue striped bandana around its neck with both arms; the puppy looks calmly and even guiltily into the lens. Behind them hangs a rack of black clothing, and in the bottom right corner of the frame sits a very small light-colored cat.
On the right are two enlarged crops of the same cat. He is light ginger, sitting on a dark floor, and a thin cord or wire runs in front of his face. His eyes look moist and shiny, and his little muzzle is slightly raised. In the second crop, the close-up makes the expression even more tragic. It was these enlargements that turned an everyday photo into a template.
Where the photo came from
According to a meme review, the original snapshot was posted on August 17, 2019, by a Reddit user with the username angiexxn in the r/aww community. It shows a person holding a puppy while a cat watches them with an expression that viewers read as sadness and jealousy. Within a few months the post received tens of thousands of upvotes.
In the following days and weeks the picture was reworked: versions with captions appeared in meme-making communities, then an edit with a “crying” cat gained popularity on Reddit in September, and by the end of October the template had firmly taken hold. Who was actually sad in the frame, and why, is unknown: we read the animal’s expression in human terms, not as a matter of fact.
Why the template works
The meme provides a ready-made scheme with three roles: the one who holds, the one being held, and the one watching from the side. Any caption can easily be placed onto this scheme. The close-ups of the cat serve as an amplifier: first the viewer sees the scene, then “moves closer” and studies the face.
The emotion is very recognizable: when someone else gets the attention, we feel superfluous. But the joke is gentle, because the cat looks touching rather than frightening. The expression needs no knowledge of context, so the meme is understood without translation.
Caption examples
“Me. My friend. His new game that he plays without me” — the classic three-role scheme, where a person and a game take the places of the dog and the owner.
“I watch my dorm roommate take my pizza out of the fridge” — a shift toward everyday grievances.
“My old phone when a new one shows up in the house” — a joke about objects, where the cat is playing with an outdated gadget.
“My other half decides to go to the movies with a friend instead of me” — gentle jealousy without drama.
How to use the template
Label each part with a caption: on the left, the one receiving attention; on the right, the one left out. Captions should be short so they do not cover faces. It is better to pair close-ups with the name of a grievance rather than a long explanation.
Do not attribute real drama to the frame or condemn the people in the photo: it is an ordinary domestic scene, and the cat’s sadness is our interpretation.
If you caption the close-ups, keep the cat’s eyes free of text: the shine in the eyes carries the main emotion. You can separately caption the cord in front of the muzzle, but that is already a joke for attentive viewers. The simple scheme “who holds, who is held, who watches” works both for work topics and for family ones.
