White Cat Hides From Dogs

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

White Cat Hides From Dogs

What this meme means

A white cat stands on its hind legs in a narrow gap, while two dogs beside it look the other way. The meme depicts a person who is very close to trouble and hopes to go unnoticed. The Dobermans appeared through editing: the original photo showed the cat in an unusual pose without this threat.

The photo before the dogs appeared

The meme is based on a photo taken by Valeriya Borisenko in 2015 in Bolhrad, Odesa Oblast. She was walking with a friend when she noticed a cat motionless on its hind legs between a house and a fence. Later the author said the animal was already in that pose: nobody had posed it for the photo. The picture appeared on her Instagram and then began spreading across entertainment pages.

At first the unusual cat existed on the internet on its own. In June 2018 a version with two Dobermans added spread. The edit turned the strange stance into a small hide-and-seek story: viewers began to think the cat was pressing against the wall to save itself. The name of the original photo's author became known from a 2020 account published by Borisenko. Who exactly added the dogs has not been reliably established. Borisenko took the picture of the cat; the dogs became part of the image only after her photo was published.

A hiding place the size of a cat

In the composition the cat is stretched vertically beside a green fence. Its white fur stands out against the gray wall, but the body itself fits into the narrow gap. Two dogs occupy the lower part of the picture; they stand side by side with their heads turned the other way. Because of this the cat seems both nearly discovered and temporarily protected: the distance is small, yet the attention of the supposed pursuers is directed past it.

The effect depends on the viewer looking down on the whole scene. We can see both the hiding place and the dogs, while the participants of the imagined chase are assumed to have incomplete information. The white hero cannot move freely without giving itself away. It takes only an extra sound or step to make a brief pause tense. At the same time, the edited photo does not show a real attack: the threat is created by the proximity of the animals and by our reading of their poses.

Danger is close but has not noticed yet

The meme's usual meaning is avoiding two problems, marked by the captions on the dogs. The cat takes the role of a person who prefers to sit out the moment instead of dealing with the problem. A pair of linked threats works especially well: they approach the hero together and block the obvious way out. The caption can make such a pair out of two unfinished tasks, two persistent interlocutors, or two notifications that it is long past time to answer.

But the hiding place does not look like a final rescue. The cat is too conspicuous to the viewer and too close to the dogs, so the hero's optimism seems fragile. This sets the picture apart from a meme about a successful escape: the outcome has not happened yet. The comic pause holds the moment just before exposure. One can laugh at one's attempt to vanish from a conversation, or at the absurdity of a carefully chosen hiding spot that conceals a person only from one convenient angle.

Invented captions for a brief respite

First invented example: the cat is a designer, and the dogs are “layout approval” and “urgent call about the layout.” He opened the graphics editor but hid for a minute in the reference folder. Second invented scenario: the cat stands for a forgotten group gift, and the dogs are “birthday tomorrow” and “the shop closes in an hour.” Here the animals take the roles of two deadlines which together make calm waiting less and less convincing.

In a third invented version, the cat reads “I accidentally opened the message” and the dogs read “read receipt” and “the question of when I will reply.” The threat is now digital, but the spatial logic remains: the hero is already next to the problem and hopes not to attract attention. In all three cases the dogs do not signify literal enemies. They make visible the closeness of a task from which the person is hiding only for a few extra minutes.
