A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Cat in a Medical Mask

What this meme means

A gray-and-white cat lies on the asphalt wearing a light blue medical mask with two eye holes neatly cut into it. The photo spread in early 2020 against the backdrop of the coronavirus epidemic and became a symbol of a silly but touching concern for health.

What's in the photo

The shot is taken from above on an asphalt street. In the center lies a cat with a dark back and white paws and chest. A light blue disposable mask is put on its face, with two round holes cut in it, and amber eyes look out through them. The mask fully covers the nose and mouth, while the tips of the ears stick out above it. A collar is visible on the neck, and a thin leash runs from it to the left edge. On the left side of the frame are a foot in a sneaker and part of a red bag.

The cat's expression reads as patient bewilderment: it has frozen and is looking straight into the camera. This impression comes from the eyes in the holes, not from the animal's actual state, which cannot be judged from a photo.

Where the photo comes from

Reportedly, the photo spread on the Chinese social network Weibo in the first weeks of the coronavirus epidemic in 2020, when masks were everywhere. Who exactly took the picture and put the mask on the cat is unknown. It is known that the Japanese model enthusiast Meetissai later made a collectible figurine based on the picture, and the proceeds were, reportedly, intended for charity in Wuhan.

In Russian-speaking social networks the frame became popular as an illustration for jokes about self-isolation and overcaution. It was spread together with other photos of pets in masks.

Why the picture is memorable

One frame combines two funny ideas: a serious object of the epidemic era and a creature that has no need for it at all. The eye holes show that someone had to work hard to lovingly adapt the mask to a cat's face. It looks both endearing and absurd.

Moreover, the picture releases tension. In those weeks the mask was a symbol of anxiety, but on the cat it turned into a gentle joke understandable to everyone without words.

A meme does not have to mock health protection: more often it is about human anxiety and the desire to plan for everything, even when it goes too far.

There is also an everyday reason for its recognizability: many pet owners have had a similar experience of a pet enduring ridiculous clothing with the look of a martyr. That is why the picture easily becomes a humorous symbol of any patient victim of someone else's care, even without references to the epidemic.

Examples for your own caption

“Me when Mom says ‘Dress warmer’ and it's twenty degrees outside” — overprotectiveness in a picture.

“My body after the first sneeze on the subway” — panic seasoned with irony.

“The employee who still wears a mask in the office because ‘you never know’” — a joke about caution.

“When the pharmacist asked what I was complaining about, and I just bought everything” — overcaution in its purest form.

How to use the template

The frame suits captions about care, anxiety, overcaution, and any situation where protection looks excessive. It is best to place the text on the asphalt at the top or bottom, since there are no small details there.

Do not seriously recommend putting masks on animals based on this picture. It is a joke, not advice.

A caption written from the cat's point of view works well: its silence and gaze through the holes read as a comment. But remember that the animal's real feelings cannot be determined from the photo, so do not present the joke as a real case.
