From a dispute over a purchase to a dispute over status
Xiaomi was founded in 2010. In the company's public positioning, the idea of an affordable price held an important place, so discussion of the brand kept returning to the balance between cost and capabilities. In online communities this choice became a convenient occasion for argument: some emphasized the practicality of the purchase, while others considered this defense excessively insistent.
Memes existed on both sides of the argument. As early as 2014, the fan community was holding a contest for images glorifying the brand. Later, forum and social media users parodied conversations in which Xiaomi became the answer to any question about technology. The device became a sign of group belonging, and its owner was credited with a habit of proving to everyone the superiority of his own purchase.
In January and February 2018, a wave of pictures comparing the brand's fans with poverty and homelessness became prominent. In these jokes, cheapness turned from an advantage into a social stigma. The spread of similar images also gave rise to suggestions of a commissioned campaign by competitors, but no confirmed client or payment has been established. The internet dispute and its parodies are far more visible than the presumed organization behind them.
The phone itself is missing from the photograph
A man with a long white beard stands in front of a large pile of bags and trash. He wears a cap, dark glasses, and a gray jacket over a shirt; a bag is visible in his hand. A container is on the left, and wooden objects lie on the right. The frame creates a sharp contrast with the familiar advertising photos of expensive devices, where the space is carefully cleared and styled.
There is no Xiaomi inscription here and no smartphone in hand. The connection with the brand is created by a caption or by placement within a series of memes. The person's identity, income, and housing circumstances cannot be established from this photograph. The meme role arises from the chosen surroundings: the trash and bags turn into a conventional sign of poverty, which the author of the remake attaches to the dispute over price.
Characteristics give way to an imagined biography
In an ordinary conversation one can compare individual properties of two phones. A meme reduces such a comparison to characters: side by side are a persistent defender of a good-value purchase and an opponent who measures a device by prestige. Each is assigned a ready-made manner of speech. Instead of checkable specifications, the discussion begins to produce caricatured biographies of the owners.
One comic move mocks the universality of advice. The hero recommends his favorite brand even when the question has nothing to do with buying a phone. Another uses the price to explain every circumstance of his life. Thus the choice of a single item inflates into a complete description of a person. The photograph by the trash makes this exaggeration especially crude and vivid.
Such pictures can also work as a parody of the argument itself. If representatives of different camps are equally insistent and equally ignore their interlocutor's question, the object of ridicule becomes the habit of turning a purchase into a worldview. The brand then serves as a badge of a role rather than as proof that a particular device is good or bad. The comedy depends on the behavior of the arguers, which is deliberately exaggerated.
An argument that forgot its original question
In an imagined sketch, a person asks where to get a comfortable desk lamp. A phone expert responds with a long speech about how much can be saved on a Xiaomi. The joke is that the useful experience of buying has stopped depending on the task: the brand's defender no longer hears the word “lamp” and once again plays his familiar monologue.
Another version places the arguers beside a common power outlet. One praises the prestige of his device, the second the good price of his own, and both have forgotten their chargers at home. The real household problem levels the characters. The meme may end with a person holding an ordinary extension cord who solves the problem without taking part in the brand contest.
A third example turns the photograph into a conditional scene of a treasure hunt: the hero insists that the best purchase is still somewhere among old boxes, while his rival has already prepared a solemn report on a new model. The invented caption plays on the difference between expenses and expectations. It does not establish the biography of the man depicted but uses a ready-made visual contrast as a backdrop for an endless dispute about things.
