A drawing with a long title
Before the short "bund" appeared, the image was known under a much more detailed caption about a savanna chimpanzee who furiously beats a stuffed leopard with a stick. It is associated with book illustrations of primate behavior. The photographic scene of an attack on the stuffed leopard was published in Jane Goodall's book "The Chimpanzees of Gombe," which shows a female with an infant on her back. The drawn internet version simplifies this scene considerably.
In the older remixes, an important role was played by the mismatch between the scientific description and the almost caricatured swing. The long title sounded solemn, while the picture looked like a ready-made illustration of a fit of rage. Users changed the object in hand, invented a different target for the blow, and turned an explanatory book illustration into an absurd little scene. This kind of humor did not require presenting the chimpanzee as a participant in a real human conflict.
How the bund joined the stick
By the end of 2017 the word "бунд" had become attached to the monkey, and in early 2018 this pairing spread widely on VKontakte and imageboards. The account of members of the KPKS community about promoting the word in comments is well known. Later the figure was used to respond to administrators' actions, and in the remixes the stick was turned into a flagpole. The history of the new wave does not coincide with the history of the drawing itself.
The misspelling turns a serious word into a funny exclamation. It resembles a noisy protest that has not yet been given a program or a coherent speech. Such a picture can be posted even after a very minor inconvenience: a disproportionately fierce character shows how exaggerated the author's reaction is. The word does not specify demands but immediately announces a mood, leaving room for a reason in the next message or caption.
The swing takes up almost the whole picture
The image shows a single black-and-white chimpanzee leaning sharply forward and holding a long stick over its head. The figure looks squat, yet the weapon rises to the very top. On the left there is a partially visible spotted object at which the movement is aimed. There is no word "бунд," no poster, and no flag here: the basis of the reaction remains an expressive silhouette.
The combination of a low posture and a high swing creates the feeling of an action about to happen. The stick has not yet come down, so the frame can be read both as an announcement of intent and as an endlessly repeatable threat to strike. For commentary this is useful: the picture does not report a completed event but depicts immediate mobilization. The absence of detailed background makes it possible to tie it to the most varied occasions without rebuilding the composition.
Three reasons for an excessive swing
An invented scene could begin with an announcement in a board game club chat: the favorite game has once again been removed from the schedule. One member replies with the monkey, and the others demand that at least one evening be returned to it. The size of the outrage deliberately exceeds the scale of the organizational decision. "Bund" signifies a general desire to argue, not a real plan to use the club.
Another variant: the company learns that the usual bakery has run out of cinnamon buns. The person was going to walk past, but after the news they immediately strike the combat pose of the meme. The sudden readiness to resist over a very small pleasure is funny. The caption can keep the dry intonation of the book title and call him a lover of pastries furiously protesting an empty tray.
In a third example, the owners of houseplants discover that the cat has once again knocked over a pot. The monkey is appointed guardian of the windowsill, even though the culprit is calmly sleeping right beside it. The swing expresses the owner's irritation, while the serene cat in the invented caption makes his helplessness even more evident. The old drawing gets a new target while keeping its main comic trait: for a small reason, a disproportionately large action has already been prepared.
