Scumbag Steve

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Scumbag Steve

What this meme means

Scumbag Steve is a 2011 macro format built around a photo of a real person named Blake Boston, taken by his mother at their home in Massachusetts. The character, in a cap worn backward and a fur-trimmed jacket, became a symbol of typically “scummy” behavior. Captions describe petty everyday betrayals and selfish acts attributed to the figure in the photo.

Origin of the photo

The original shot was taken by the mother of Blake Boston, a teenager from Massachusetts, who posted it on her blog around the mid-2000s, long before the image became an internet meme. In the photo, Boston stands in a doorway of a house: a plaid cap is worn backward, a puffy jacket with a fur-trimmed hood is on his shoulders, and a chunky chain hangs around his neck. The combination of these details formed a visual archetype that internet users later dubbed “luxury scumbag,” a deliberately careless yet dapper look.

Turning into a meme format

The photo reached a wider audience in early 2011 through meme-generator platforms, where users began adding captions in the classic macro format: a short line at the top setting up the context of an act, and a line at the bottom revealing the character's selfish motive. The typical caption described a situation in which the hero would appear dishonorable, for example by borrowing something and never returning it, or by using someone's favor without any thanks in return.

The format caught on quickly thanks to the recognizability of the image and the simplicity of the template: all it took was a short everyday situation that fit naturally into the already established visual.

Peak popularity

By mid-2011, Scumbag Steve had become one of the most recognizable characters of rage comics culture and meme generators, alongside other macros of that period. The image regularly appeared on forums, blogs, and social networks. The backward-turned cap became a visual marker that was also used for other similar characters, which gave rise to a broader category of “scumbag” memes with other faces but the same joke structure.

The photo subject's response

Unlike many people whose photos unexpectedly become memes without their knowledge, Blake Boston eventually publicly acknowledged authorship of the shot and began using his unexpected fame for his own purposes. He launched a music career under a stage name referencing the meme's nickname, released tracks and merchandise, and in effect monetized his own viral image rather than distancing himself from it.

Typical captions and the format's legacy

Classic captions are usually built on two lines: “borrowed your lighter” at the top and “never gave it back, even though I see you every day” at the bottom, or variations on similar petty everyday betrayals. Although the peak of active use fell in 2011–2012, the image still periodically resurfaces in collections of classic internet memes as one of the recognizable examples of the early-2010s macro era.

Another characteristic caption plays on the theme of visiting someone: “came over with empty hands” at the top and “ate half the fridge while everyone was sitting in the other room” at the bottom. This two-step structure, escalating from minor rudeness to a blatantly brazen act, became a recognizable stylistic device across the whole “scumbag” family of memes.

Why the format remains recognizable

Scumbag Steve's longevity as a cultural template is explained by several factors: the simplicity and repeatability of the template, a striking visual detail in the backward cap that itself became a recognizable symbol, and the unusual fate of the man in the photo, who publicly embraced the image and made it part of his own biography. Together, these made the meme one of the rare cases where the story does not stop at the joke itself but continues in the real life of its unintentional hero.
