The Shrinking Lemon

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

The Shrinking Lemon

What this meme means

A drawn template in which a character tastes a sour lemon and instantly shrinks, grimaces, or flattens. It spread in spring 2024 as art and memes about reacting to something unbearably sour.

From a sour bite to a series of drawings

In spring 2024, artists and meme communities started sharing drawings in which a character licks a lemon and, from the sourness, loses its face or shrinks. Traces of the format are linked to an earlier drawing of a gray bird, but known roundups note this as a guess rather than confirmed authorship. Versions then appeared with cats, people, pop-culture characters, and even inanimate objects. This matters: the meme isn't tied to one character, but is built on a transferable visual reaction.

The illustration shows a simplified two-frame scene: on the left a large lemon and a green character, on the right its shrunken, squashed version. A pink tongue signals the taste of something sour, and the repeated pose helps the eye read the transition. This is specifically a drawing, not a photo of an experiment and not proof of any character's real reaction.

A physical reaction becomes a metaphor

Sourness makes people grimace, and artists literally exaggerate that reaction: the face disappears, the body shrinks, the object shrinks. The more composed a character usually looks, the sharper the contrast between its status and its sudden lemon-induced weakness. Figuratively, the picture can show embarrassment after unexpected news, disappointment from a very sour drink, or how a big idea collapsed once it was checked.

Not every version necessarily means humiliation or failure. Sometimes the artist simply likes the striking visual transition. So the caption should hint at exactly what 'shrank': an expectation, self-esteem, a budget, or the character's own shape. Without a clear target for the joke, the drawing remains understandable but fairly generic as a grimace.

A good caption names not only the trigger but also what exactly got reset to zero — an expectation, confidence, a line item in a budget — so the viewer sees the cause of the shrinking rather than just a repeat of the sour face.

Examples of unexpected shrinking

To the two lemon frames you could add: 'Me: I'll calmly answer the question now. That very question about salary:' — after which the character shrinks. It's funny because of the sudden loss of confidence and the disproportionate turn of an ordinary awkward moment into a catastrophe. Another version: 'Vacation budget before buying tickets / after seeing the baggage fee.' The comparison works if the second half genuinely shows a shrunken sum, rather than just repeating the word 'lemon.'

For an art-style version: 'My resolve to try an extremely spicy sauce, five seconds from now.' Here the transformation visually stands in for the grimace. These captions are invented to illustrate the format; they don't describe specific historical drawings or real people's actual taste reactions.

You can draw more than just characters

The series allows swapping out the subject: you could show a folding chair that collapsed from one awkward glance, or a cloud of plans that shrank after checking the schedule. As long as there are two states, 'before' and 'after,' and a clear cause for the change, the viewer doesn't need a long caption. In this version you can keep the traditional lemon-and-character pair, add your own character, or replace the citrus trigger with another sharp stimulus while keeping the principle of exaggeration.

Don't turn shrinking a real person's appearance into mockery of their body or an illness. It's better to draw fictional characters, objects, and states rather than layering visual humiliation onto a photo of someone you know without their consent. The template is funny because of the deliberate, instant transformation, not because of any real person's physical features.
