Venom

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Venom

What this meme means

Venom is a black symbiote with a huge toothy mouth whose menacing look easily turns into comedy. In memes he represents hunger, overexcitement, an inner argument, or a reaction far bigger than its cause.

From black costume to Venom

Peter Parker returned from the 1984 Secret Wars wearing a black costume, which appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #252. It was later revealed to be an alien symbiote; Reed Richards discovered its nature, and Peter got rid of it. The rejected creature then found other hosts. In The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988), Venom appeared in full as Spider-Man’s enemy, with journalist Eddie Brock as his host. Brock blamed Peter for ruining his career; their shared resentment made the partnership with an alien being especially dangerous. A black costume from a cosmic story had become a character with his own grievance and voice.

The 2018 film Venom brings that conflict into Brock’s life. Tom Hardy plays the journalist, who tries to return to an ordinary routine while the symbiote demands food, speaks to him, and can take control of his body. Their shared life is built on incompatible wishes: Brock wants to manage the consequences, while Venom acts on impulse. That disagreement lets the character appear as both a threat and a comic partner.

The film also gives their conflict a concrete outside setting: Brock investigates the Life Foundation, where people are subjected to experiments involving symbiotes. His meeting with Venom begins as a consequence of that investigation rather than a voluntary partnership. The story then follows both of them as they adapt to sharing one body. This expands their comic argument: Brock must manage the alien’s appetite and deal with the fallout of his work as a journalist.

A toothy grin as a reaction

The image is a close-up of a black head with white eyes, a toothy mouth, and a hanging tongue. It can read as a predatory grin, but the frame contains no setting, caption, or other detail that securely identifies a scene. Without that context, it reads primarily as a self-contained portrait of the character. In the meme format, the expressive face matters more: it can intensify hunger, excitement, irritation, or mock menace.

Caption examples

“Me: I’ll get something light. Also me when the menu arrives.” The contrast connects an attempt at self-control with a visually insatiable character.

“My inner voice when there’s room in the cart for one more unnecessary thing.” The symbiote becomes an image of temptation rather than a literal shopper.

“I promised to explain the board-game rules calmly. Then I saw them play out of turn again.” The threatening look exaggerates a familiar irritation; the joke is aimed at the narrator’s own lack of restraint.

“Friday mood after the message: tomorrow’s meeting is canceled.” The toothy face can also convey joy when the caption supplies an everyday situation.

Brock argues with the symbiote

Venom does more than make Brock stronger: the creature has desires of its own and disputes decisions with its host. In the film, their conflict shows even in small matters: Brock tries to negotiate rules while the symbiote responds with impulse and sarcasm. The joke comes not only from hunger, but from two incompatible personalities forced to share one body.

A caption can stage their conflict directly: “Brock: let’s finish reading the instructions. Venom: I already pressed the button”; “Me: no sweets today. Venom: there’s still cake in the fridge.” These lines draw on the character’s premise: two wills share one body, so even a simple choice can become an argument.
