The film title gets a second reading
In 2018, “Avengers: Infinity War” became one of the prominent sources of superhero memes. In the Russian-language wave, people also discussed the joking title “war without limbs.” By mid-May, images linking it to search suggestions and literal reworkings of characters were circulating. The author of the first pun and the creator of this drawing have not been identified. The game was easy to understand and could be reproduced independently: it is enough to hear the film's title and divide the familiar sequence of sounds differently.
The picture belongs to the illustrative branch of this joke. A search screenshot suggests imagining a misspelled query, while the drawing shows a conditional film that might match such a title. These are two different ways of using one linguistic find. The black outlines of the superheroes give the title a new visual form, though they do not depict the actual plot of the Marvel film or a scene from its cinematic finale.
A gap that changes the meaning
The word «бесконечность» (infinity) describes the absence of an end, while the phrase «без конечностей» (without limbs) brings to mind arms and legs. The close sound combined with sharply different meanings forms the basis of the pun. A small change in how the words are divided and written moves the title from the realm of cosmic scale into the realm of the characters' literal bodily form. The joke works precisely in Russian: the viewer must simultaneously remember the correct title and recognize the second meaning offered by the deliberately wrong variant.
The team is recognized by what remains
On a white background are black-and-white drawings of superheroes. Among them one can make out Captain America with his star, Iron Man with his characteristic mask, Hulk's large head, and Spider-Man hanging upside down. The figures have no ordinary whole arms or legs; their bodies look shortened and schematic. The rough line keeps the signs by which the characters can be recognized, but almost removes everything connected with their usual actions and heroic mobility.
Literal fantasy instead of a retelling
The image resembles a caricatured poster: several familiar faces are united by one funny principle. A mask, an emblem and the silhouette of a head are enough for recognition, so the artist can greatly simplify the bodies and still keep the team. A double task arises for the viewer: first he finds the familiar heroes, then he matches their appearance with the pun. There is no caption within the drawing itself, and the meme's title helps complete this visual riddle.
The device differs from an ordinary caption on a reaction. Here a textual find determines how exactly the image should be changed. The name becomes a short assignment for an artist, who carries it out literally, exaggerating the accidental sound-alike. Thanks to this, the parody can exist as a drawing, a joke poster or an invented headline for a review. Its constant element is the new segmentation of words, while the specific set of superheroes and the drawing style change from version to version.
Two scenes with a literal title
In an invented comic, a hero hears the film's title over the phone and draws a poster, following exactly the variant “without limbs.” A second character looks at the resulting team and asks: “I asked for the regular ‘Avengers.’” The punchline restores the correct title, and the drawing becomes the result of a funny literal understanding. All the actions here take place with a conventional illustration: the source of humor is a linguistic misunderstanding that the artist took for a description of the heroes' appearance.
In a second invented example, a friend sends an invitation to watch together but writes “War Without Limbs.” The interlocutor replies with this picture and asks: “Is this definitely the film where the heroes fight?” The phrase connects the expectation of an action movie with a drawing in which the fighters' usual poses are impossible. Here no one draws a new poster: the comic substitution is created by an already finished illustration, presented as if it were a literal clarification of the title.
