Admire the Aesthetic

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Admire the Aesthetic

What this meme means

'Admire the Aesthetic' is a series of videos by a TikToker who presents a 'right' lifestyle (sport, quitting bad habits, discipline) in a deliberately pompous, exaggerated style. The delivery itself became a comic object and a source of memes mocking the self-importance of healthy-lifestyle (ZOZH) content.

Who is in the frame

The image shows a young man without a shirt against the recognizable repeating pattern of TikTok logos. His expression is deliberately stern and focused, and his pose and framing are typical of videos about training and discipline. This visual treatment, a close-up of a face over the platform's signature background, is a common device for bloggers whose videos get repackaged and reposted outside the app. That is why the logo background stays in screenshots as a recognizable detail.

What the videos contain

The format is built around short, deliberately emotional monologues about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. In an exaggerated, almost preachy tone, the author urges viewers to give up alcohol, take up sport and 'love' discipline and self-restraint, using phrases like 'admire the aesthetic' in reference to an athletic body or an ascetic daily routine. The delivery is so hyperbolized, in intonation, facial expression and word choice, that much of the audience takes it not as serious advice but as a comic performance.

Why it became a meme

The key mechanism is the gap between the real banality of the advice ('drink less, train more') and the ecstatic, almost ritual manner in which it is delivered. This excessive seriousness gave rise to ironic reposts: the author's phrases and intonations were widely quoted and parodied, including by laying them over deliberately unserious footage that contradicts their meaning, such as feasts, laziness and bad habits, for contrast.

A similar mechanism has worked before with other motivational creators: social media audiences are quick to turn an overly earnest delivery of simple truths, one that lacks any self-irony, into a target for mockery. In this sense, healthy-lifestyle videos are a particularly vulnerable genre, because the theme of discipline and self-restraint easily reads as an invitation to pathos.

How the format spread

The videos and their phrases spread quickly across TikTok and neighboring platforms in 2021 as a recognizable template for jokes about showy fanaticism around healthy living in general, not only about the specific creator. Individual expressions came to be used as captions for any post about excessive seriousness and pathos in everyday topics.

Screenshots from the videos, including the frame with the signature TikTok logo background, circulated on pages and forums separately from the videos, as a recognizable illustration of the 'fitness preacher' archetype itself. Commenters use it without needing to watch the original videos in full.

Typical captions and use

The phrase and style are quoted as a standalone line, for example: 'Admire the aesthetic of a cold shower at six in the morning' or 'Alcohol? Ew. Protein shake? Yes.' The delivery is deliberately serious but ironic in practice, copying the original's manner.

The meme is also used as a catch-all label for any content in which the author talks about self-discipline or giving up pleasures with excessive pathos. Commenters caption other people's videos about diets, early wake-ups or sport with 'admire the aesthetic', even when the creator of that video has no connection to the original TikToker. The phrase lives on its own, detached from the specific person, as a label for an entire style of delivery.
