Winona Ryder's Expressions

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Winona Ryder's Expressions

What this meme means

A screenshot of Winona Ryder beside David Harbour became a reaction to the actor's serious speech at the SAG Awards: her expression seems to answer what she hears with a short silent line. The screenshot preserves both the photo and the original comment by CJ Fogler.

Speech at the ceremony

The 23rd Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony took place on the evening of January 29, 2017. Stranger Things won the award for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series, and David Harbour gave a speech on behalf of the cast. In the SAG-AFTRA transcript, he talks about art as a way to fight fear, egocentrism and exclusion and to develop empathy. Winona Ryder, who played Joyce Byers, stands beside Harbour; the broadcast shows her face during his speech. Concluding, Harbour referred to the series' imagery and spoke about standing up to bullies, which gave the speech both a solemn and a playful tone.

Here, the image is not a single frame but a screenshot of a post by CJ Fogler (@cjzero). In the tweet, he praises the speech and notes Ryder's facial expression during its first part. The screenshot shows 10:48 PM, 29 Jan 2017.

How a broadcast fragment became a reaction

By January 30, Ryder's facial expression was already being discussed alongside Harbour's speech itself. In CJ Fogler's post, the speech and the expression are tied together with a single caption: the serious speech remains the occasion, while the actress becomes the viewer's visual response. In later reposts, the photo was cropped and given new words, gradually separating it from the awards stage.

In an interview on January 30, Harbour spoke warmly about Ryder and her expressive face. He said he was glad that his emotional speech sat beside the actress's amused reaction, and planned to joke with her about it after returning to filming. The participant's response differed from meme guesses about what she was actually thinking every second.

The face as a parallel commentary

Harbour's speech sounds like a single public address, while the camera at the same time catches Ryder beside him. The result is a montage effect without editing: attention shifts between the speaker's words and the listener's face. A viewer can read surprise, concentration or a question in it. In the saved screenshot, a smiling member of the ensemble is also visible on the left; the meme usually picks Ryder specifically and turns her expression into a short line.

The solemn scene heightens the contrast: formal suits, the microphone and a serious speech surround Ryder's expressive face. Within one photo, two modes of communication coexist: the speaker addresses the whole hall, while the listener ends up at the center of a much more personal reaction. Because of this, the face is easy to read as an unspoken comment from someone who hears the same words but responds to them in their own way.

Invented captions

“When a coworker says ‘I'll explain it briefly’ and then opens thirty tabs.” The caption turns the listener into a viewer trying to keep up with the promised brevity and an ever-longer introduction. Her expression works as a wordless pause before a clarifying question.

“I heard ‘delivery is almost here,’ but the map shows a different city.” Conflicting versions of the same story turn the face into a reaction to an unexpected contradiction.

“Wait, what? I missed the condition in the fine print.” The expressive face becomes a brief moment of confusion in the middle of a confident explanation.
