A magic trick in a London club

In July 2018 British magician Julius Dein showed Drake a trick with a lollipop at the London club Annabel’s. Dein posted the video on social media, and by July 12 music media were already discussing the encounter. At first the object looks like an ordinary candy on a stick. After the manipulation, the viewer is shown a lollipop whose outline resembles Batman’s head. It is precisely the transformation of a familiar object into a small superhero silhouette that provokes the rapper’s noticeable reaction.

Throughout the clip, Drake’s expression changes, so a single photo conveys only a moment of the encounter. For the meme, a particularly tense grimace was chosen: when viewed still, it looks like both surprise and disgust at once. In July remakes, the frame began to be accompanied by everyday captions, with the object in front of the rapper’s face designated as the source of shock. Thus a cheerful magic demonstration turned into a universal recognition of something suspicious.

The face and the object in front of it

The image shows Drake in close-up under blue-violet club lighting. He has furrowed his brow, raised his upper lip and looks toward a lollipop on a white stick. At the right edge, part of a second person is visible; lights and the silhouettes of patrons remain behind the subjects. The frame is tight, so almost all the information is concentrated in the face and the small candy in front of it. There is no explanatory caption on the image itself.

The lollipop makes the reaction directed: the viewer sees what exactly is being looked at, although without the clip they do not know what happened before. Hence two variants of the joke. In one, the candy is kept and the whole situation is captioned. In the other, the object takes a separate role — for example, an unexpected price, a dubious cooking result or someone else’s offer. At the same time, the club origin of the frame stops defining the plot.

Surprise with a delay

The main effect arises between the words “I was shown this” and “I realize what I’m seeing.” The face seems stuck in the gap: the object has already been noticed, but a suitable reaction has not yet arrived. That is why the snapshot suits a discovery that at first seems absurd and then becomes unpleasantly plausible. It depicts not so much a refusal as the pause before it, when a person is still checking whether they read the situation or heard their interlocutor correctly.

Drake’s recognizability adds incongruity. A person we are used to seeing in music videos and on big stages turns out to be defeated by a tiny object. An everyday trigger can seem more important than all the solemn surroundings. The caption creates a concrete reason for the confusion, while the photo supplies an exaggerated physical reaction. Thanks to this, even a few calm words are read as the beginning of a personal crisis.

Three unexpected finds

Invented variant: “When I opened the delivery cost after choosing the item.” The lollipop becomes a small line in the order that suddenly changes the attitude toward the whole purchase. At first the person is pleased with the find, then notices the total, and this shift of mood fits Drake’s grimace.

Another example: “Tasting the soup my neighbor called experimental.” What matters here is the cautious first contact: the hero has not yet made a scene or refused the food, but his face already shows doubt. For a work chat, “When I saw that a five-minute presentation consists of forty slides” will do. A small promised task turns into an unexpectedly large ordeal, and the glance at the lollipop becomes a glance at an open file.
