A photo older than the catchphrase
One of the known early traces of the photograph leads to a post by the user kirilblch on Pikabu on August 31, 2017. The post was accompanied by a joke about “fluffy bones,” the usual excuse for an animal's impressive size. This trace shows the picture was already in circulation, but it does not establish the cat's name or prove the user's authorship. In September, remakes appeared with lines about an appetite so large that the bowl could vanish along with the food.
In spring 2018 the image was spread by large communities on VKontakte. In the April variants a deliberately incorrect request for food took hold and became the name of the meme. The gap between the dates matters: the photograph appeared in the known trace earlier than the most recognizable Russian caption. Later the picture was reinterpreted in English too, including linking the red leaves on the fabric with Canada and maple syrup.
The guest is already ready
The cat sits right in front of the camera on a red patterned rug. To his left are a white door and a chipped doorframe; to the right the space continues into another room. He is gray, with stripes in his fur, wide-open eyes and neatly placed front paws. A light triangular cloth with red leaves is tied around his neck. There is no caption, no bowl and no food in the frame.
The fabric resembles a bib, although the photo itself does not explain why it was tied on. In the meme scene it becomes a sign of preliminary preparation: the guest seems to have completed all necessary steps and now waits to be served. The upright sitting adds ceremony. The cat does not jump onto the table or reach for a plate, so it is easy to picture him at once hungry, well-mannered and utterly unwilling to refuse seconds.
Big appetite and a small request
The distorted “покушот” creates the character's voice: guileless, homey, slightly childlike. In words the request sounds modest, especially if “немношка” (a teeny-weeny bit) is added. The image, by contrast, promises a substantial eater. The contrast lets one laugh at one's own desire for a snack, which is usually declared insignificant even though it hides readiness for a full second lunch. The cat's size serves as an exaggeration of that readiness.
Another nuance is tied to waiting. The gaze is directed straight at the viewer, and it feels as though the question is addressed to them. Any rustle of a bag, a mention of the kitchen, or a photo of dinner can become an imagined reason for the guest to appear. The picture conveys not sharp hunger after a long road but a steady interest in food: the possibility of eating has been discovered, so one must politely find out whether a portion is available.
Three moments for seconds
An invented variant: “I'm ten minutes past the family dinner: so what are we having with the tea?” The smile comes from the sideways continuation of the meal. The hero has already eaten but steers the conversation to the next dish as if the main program were only beginning. The bib makes this question especially businesslike.
Another example: “When they invited me over to 'just chat,' and something is frying in the kitchen.” The character politely keeps the listener's position, though his interest is already directed at an invisible frying pan. For a work chat, “The employee who first heard about the cake in the meeting room” fits. The straight sitting becomes readiness to join the celebration at once, while the big appetite depicts a collective hope for an unplanned pleasant pause in the usual schedule.
