Miss Vanjie

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Miss Vanjie

What this meme means

Miss Vanjie is the farewell line of Vanessa Vanjie Mateo from RuPaul’s Drag Race that became a meme in its own right. By repeating her stage name while backing away from the stage, the performer turned a brief elimination from the competition into a memorable number. In the remixes her voice appears wherever the viewer expects a completely different answer, and the three repetitions sound almost like an incantation.

A farewell in the first episode

In March 2018, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo became the first contestant eliminated from the tenth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Her run in the competition ended after a lip-sync challenge. However, what viewers remember most is the exit: instead of an ordinary farewell line, the performer said her name several times while stepping backward. The broadcast segment kept three drawn-out “Miss Vanjie”s, to which the judges also reacted.

In an April interview, Mateo explained that she had not planned this moment in advance. She was upset and began repeating her name because nothing else came to mind. The footage shown was part of a longer farewell; the performer herself did not remember its exact duration. The spontaneity therefore does not mean that viewers saw the whole event. The short television edit gave the repetition a convenient form that is easy to recognize and to carry into other scenes.

A portrait with dolls and pink

The picture shows Mateo in close-up against a shiny purple curtain. Light wavy hair frames a face with bold stage makeup; the outfit features pink details and small dolls. A tattoo is visible on her chest. The close-up holds attention on the face and the performer’s bright look. The exit itself lies outside its frame: the viewer recalls the backward movement and the repeated name thanks to the portrait’s link to the famous farewell.

The name takes the place of any answer

The phrase is very simple in content, but its recognizability comes from the voice, the pauses, and the return to one name. The first utterance resembles an introduction, the second starts an independent number, and the third fixes its rhythm. That is why the meme does not necessarily convey a specific thought. It can interrupt an expected line and make the scene revolve around an insistent self-introduction by someone who was about to leave.

In late March and early April, fans inserted the name into film and TV scenes, captions, and remixes. Mateo herself discussed her favorite remakes, and RuPaul backed the wave on Twitter. In such versions the original audio often stopped being the topic: what mattered was unexpectedly hearing a familiar intonation. A dramatic pause, a phone answer, or a solemn caption received the same content, even though the original situations had nothing to do with the competition.

Three imagined appearances

In an imagined video montage, a quiz host asks a serious question about who made a geographic discovery. A contestant presses the button; after a tense pause, instead of the explorer’s surname, “Miss Vanjie” rings out. The next two repeats accompany the faces of the host and the rival. What is funny is how confidently the same line takes the place of knowledge it could never supply.

Another imagined scene follows a person saying goodbye to guests at the door. He has already put on his coat, but three times he returns to the conversation: first he remembers a recipe, then a promised film, then a forgotten umbrella. Each turn gets another utterance of the name. Here the remix uses not only the sound but also the structure of an exit that never quite gets finished.

In a third version, a robot vacuum bumps into a wall, backs off, turns, and drives back to the same spot. Each maneuver is accompanied by one part of the triple repetition. The machine seems to insistently introduce itself to the room, although it is supposed to simply keep cleaning. An everyday movement becomes a small stage exit; knowledge of all the rules of Drag Race is no longer required for this unexpected combination.
