Your Order Will Be Delivered By

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Your Order Will Be Delivered By

What this meme means

The phrase “Your order will be delivered by…” came from outdoor advertising for Delivery Club in May 2019, which showed couriers as people with life stories. Users quickly began inserting other characters into it, and on this card the “courier” is the queen from a fantasy series.

The courier campaign

In May 2019 Delivery Club launched outdoor advertising in Moscow in which couriers were shown not as faceless performers but as people with professions, hobbies and families. According to industry publications, the campaign was based on the biographies of six real couriers from the service, and it was developed by the media holding Look At Media. Posters with photographs and short stories were placed on central streets, at MCC (Moscow Central Circle) stations and inside metro cars.

Articles about the campaign are dated May 16 and 17, 2019. The service itself called it the first social advertising about couriers in Russia, but this is the client's wording, not an external assessment. Each poster followed the same scheme: a large headline “Your order will be delivered by…” with the hero's former or current profession, and below it a line about what they enjoy and whom they are raising.

The headline that became a meme

The most quoted line was “Your order will be delivered by a literature teacher.” The formula sounds like an ordinary service slogan, and the next word unexpectedly changes the scale: instead of a nameless performer, a person with a biography appears. Other characters in the campaign included a reporter, a mountaineer and a former officer.

In the first days, Twitter users picked up the construction and started inventing who else might be standing at the door with an order. The format proved convenient: it needs only a loud title and a couple of everyday details to produce a ready-made joke.

Why the campaign sparked debate

Reactions were mixed. Some users accused the service of unintentionally showing that the humanities are useless: if a teacher or reporter works as a courier, then making a living in their former job must be hard. Others defended the idea and reminded everyone that people choose their work themselves, and that couriers today can earn more than teachers and journalists.

It was this argument that gave the meme a second layer. For some, “Your order will be delivered by…” remained a harmless play on the format; for others it became an ironic comment on how little education is valued. A good caption in this format usually does not try to settle the debate, but simply uses the contrast between a grand title and everyday work.

What is shown on the card

The image is designed as a parody of a poster on a green background. In the upper left corner are the Delivery Club name and the word “Now”, as in a notification. Below, in white type, it reads “Your order will be delivered by Queen Daenerys, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men”. Beneath this is a line in the style of real posters: “Daenerys enjoys fire and is raising three one child”, where the word “three” is crossed out.

On the right is a woman with platinum braids in gray-brown clothing with decorative details, looking serious and slightly tired. The text in the picture names her Daenerys, so she is the heroine of the fantasy series. The crossed-out “three” apparently hints at the dragons the heroine calls her children, of whom only a few remained by that point. In the lower left corner a white silhouette of an ostrich and the Delivery Club caption are visible.

Caption examples and how they work

“Your order will be delivered by a leading astrologer, who got it wrong by two signs today.” The headline sets up grandeur, and the continuation brings the caption back to predictions and laughs at the genre itself.

“Your order will be delivered by a retiree who knows every courtyard in the district without a navigator.” The contrast here is softer: respect for experience is combined with the ordinary work of a courier. The caption works through a specific detail rather than a grand word.

“Your order will be delivered by a programmer who wrote tests and didn't break anything.” It is funny because of the unexpected scale of the achievement in the mundane context of delivery. The format is the same every time: a grand role in the first line and a short everyday detail in the second. It is this shift that makes the caption recognisable.

How to adapt the format to your own situation

The format works when the title and the detail live in the same reality, rather than colliding by chance. Good variants are short and have one precise detail. Long captions lose their rhythm and stop resembling an advertising slogan.

It is better to keep the focus on the profession and the situation rather than on the appearance or personal details of a specific person. Then the joke stays about work and expectations, not about who exactly is standing at the door.
