What the image shows
The picture is made in a simple graphics editor. Above the round head is a large yellow hat with wide brims and a green zigzag pattern around the edge. The face is in the style of a “poker face”: two dots for eyes, a straight horizontal line for a mouth, no emotion at all. A single thin line serves as the neck. On the right, black text reads: “in such moments you dont need to say anything just give a mysterious look in a mexcian hatt.”
An important detail: in this version the words are misspelled, and the image itself underlines them with the red wavy lines of a spell checker. “Mexcian” and “hatt” are among these deliberate errors. This is not an editor's accident but part of the style: the broken spelling makes the advice even more deliberately absurd, as if written by a serious person in a hurry.
First mentions and popularity
The meme is traced back roughly to June 2013, and its author is unknown. The early version looked like a sketch of a little man in a sombrero with the phrase “In such moments you should not say anything, just give a mysterious look in a Mexican hat.” In 2014 this version gained notable popularity in Russian-speaking communities.
A second life came around 2018–2019: it was given an abstract look, the character was replaced with a “poker face,” and typos were deliberately sprinkled into the text. It was this version that spread on Russian Twitter, and it is the version behind the image here.
Where the humor lies
The advice is phrased as everyday wisdom: when words don't help, it is better to keep quiet. But the continuation breaks the expectation: instead of “keep quiet and walk away” it suggests “give a mysterious look in a Mexican hat.” The hat detail is unexpected and utterly random, which is why it is funny: no real person wears a sombrero for such moments.
The second part of the joke is the serious face with no emotion. The blank expression fits well with the idea of a mysterious look: the character seems to be silently meaningful, though it is simply drawn with two dots and a line. The result is a playful parody of pseudo-wisdom, where a solemn tone covers emptiness.
Caption examples
Below are invented examples to show the mechanics.
“When someone asks in the chat who forgot to switch off the server over the weekend,” with this image under it. It replaces any excuse.
“The boss on a call: ‘Any questions?’ My plan of action.” The hat plays the role of an answer when there are too many questions to ask.
“My mother-in-law looks at my salad.” A wordless tension that is better not to break with words.
“The seller names a price I can't afford.” The pause and the sombrero turn the awkwardness into a little show.
How to use the template
The meme works best in situations where words are out of place: an awkward pause, someone else's mistake, an unexpected question. The caption should describe exactly such a moment, and the picture itself takes on the role of the reaction.
If you want to keep the style, do not correct the spelling in the text on the image: the errors in “mexcian hatt” are part of the original look. If you need the joke in a serious context, it is better to choose the correct version of the phrase with a “Mexican hat,” otherwise the mistakes will read as carelessness.
For formatting it is enough to keep the drawing as it is and add an introductory line above it. Extra effects and filters only get in the way: the picture's main value lies in its simplicity.
