Ankha (the Yellow Egyptian Cat from Animal Crossing)

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Ankha (the Yellow Egyptian Cat from Animal Crossing)

What this meme means

Ankha is a yellow Egyptian-style cat from Animal Crossing. In 2021 an adult-themed fan animation and a dance to “Camel by Camel” spread her image online, though the game character is an ordinary villager.

Who Ankha is

The picture shows two drawings of the cat in different styles. On the left, in a soft, childlike manner, she sits hugging her knees and holds a golden ankh on a handle; on the right, the same character with eye makeup and an ankh-shaped staff stands against a dark background. A signature in the corner indicates the drawings are by a third-party artist, so this is fan art rather than game footage. Both versions share yellow fur, blue stripes, a golden snake on the head and an Egyptian headband.

Ankha is a villager in the Animal Crossing series. According to a fan encyclopedia, she first appeared in Animal Forest+ in 2001, and her look is based on ancient Egyptian motifs: gold and lapis lazuli colors, a hairstyle resembling a royal headdress, and a name derived from the ankh hieroglyph, the symbol of life. In the game her personality is haughty but gradually warming: a fashion-conscious cat.

Why people started talking about her in 2021

The main driver was not Nintendo itself but a fan video. According to meme encyclopedias, the artist ZONE-sama posted an adult-oriented animation on 28 January 2021; the next day it was being discussed on Twitter, and parody videos appeared in February. The details of the animation are not important here; it is enough to know that it is intended for adults and has no connection to the game.

She owes her mass popularity to autumn 2021. In September, the song “Camel by Camel” by Sandy Marton went viral on TikTok, and people repeated the moves from the video: crossed arms and swaying. A new wave came in June 2022, when cosplay versions of the dance began to appear. So the period of popularity is spread out and consists of several waves.

How the joke works

The joke is that the sweet image of a game character collides with rough internet culture. For many viewers, the first association with Ankha is not the game but the dance, and the gap between the two gives pleasure to those who are “in the know”. That is why the meme is often presented as a sign of belonging to an online community: an outsider will not understand where the reaction comes from.

Rhythm matters, too. The dance is simple, repetitive and suitable for looping, so any video set to this music reads as on-theme: just sway at the right moment.

Captions for a safe version

Invented examples for an ordinary picture of Ankha. “When the job is done, and you're in no hurry to leave.” The cat's haughty pose and half-lowered eyelids show the composure of someone who has already decided everything.

“Me: politely listening to my coworkers. My inner voice:” The caption plays on the contrast between outer and inner reactions.

“Egypt, the one we deserved.” The joke rests on the absurd pairing of a travel theme with a cartoon cat.

“Checking who brought a gift today.” It fits the game's setup, where villagers behave like capricious owners of the island.

What to keep in mind

Since the character is linked to adult material, references to her call for care and are best kept away from a child audience. It is safer to use game or neutral artwork, as in this picture, and to build the joke on the cat's personality: haughtiness, ancient Egyptian style, theatrical pose.
