The star on the candy

A close-up of a round tin box holding a flat golden candy stamped with a five-pointed star. A needle enters the box from above, held by an elderly person’s hand. The background is blurred and sand-coloured. Judging by the frame, the game is already underway, but the scene is not retold in detail: the joke doesn’t need it.

The candy itself is called dalgona, or ppopgi: a traditional Korean sweet made from melted sugar and baking soda, pressed with a mould and sold by street vendors.

Where the game came from

Squid Game was written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk. The season has nine episodes; the lead role is played by Lee Jung-jae. The dalgona task is shown in the third episode, “Man with an Umbrella”: one must carve the stamped shape out of the candy with a needle without breaking it, within ten minutes. According to the production designer, the author did something like this as a child, and the trick of licking the candy to loosen its seams comes from there too.

The games in the plot are built on childhood pastimes. Their main property is simplicity of rules: the viewer needs nothing explained, and attention goes to the characters. Dalgona fits perfectly: it has a clear goal and an obvious way to lose.

From the series to the kitchen

A few days after the premiere a challenge started on TikTok: people made dalgona at home and cut out shapes. One of the early popular clips, according to trend catalogues, appeared on 21 September 2021. At the same time, street vendors in Seoul faced queues: the couple who made the candy for filming said people stood for several hours.

Such a path is rather rare for a meme: it left the screen for the kitchen and turned into a contest in which you can lose to an edible object.

How small tension makes people laugh

What passed from the series into the meme was not the anxiety but the mechanics themselves: a small object, great concentration, a fragile result. The viewer sees that the hero’s life is at stake, but the joke pushes that plot aside and leaves only a trembling hand and a needle.

That is why captions compare any task requiring care with dalgona. The irony is that the stakes are deliberately inflated.

Captions

“Me when I carefully take out the last piece of the puzzle” — a hand with a needle turns the game into an exam.

“Peeling a sticker off a new thing without damaging the picture” — an everyday task that everyone knows and usually fails.

“The two of us trying to pull the charger out of the socket without breaking it” — a joke about shared silent tension.

Captions are best built on tasks where one movement can really ruin everything: then the comparison with the star on the candy needs no explaining. Dark plot details of the series are better left out of captions: the frame is funny without them.

There is also a reverse move: the frame can be used without a riddle caption, simply by sending it in reply to a request like “do it carefully.” The other person will immediately understand that utmost caution is expected. The series’ plot needs no reminder — the frame works as a standalone picture.
