Four frames from the park

This meme is a collage of four photos in a green setting. In the top left shot, a man in a purple jacket and patterned shirt stands by the water, one hand raised to his face, gazing into the distance. In the top right, a close-up: dark glasses, a red jacket, a black shirt and branches in the background. Bottom left, he wears a dark blue suit in a clearing with yellow patches of light, holding something dark in his hand, his gaze turned to the side. Bottom right, a figure in a purple suit and glasses stands on a path between bushes.

What the frames share is a theatrical unhurriedness. The hero is not going about business; he poses among the trees as if enjoying the moment. That is exactly what became material for jokes.

From a 2018 video to TikTok

The source material is the video “Yevgeny Ponasenkov: how beautiful the park is at sunset after the rain!” on the channel “Common Sense Channel”. According to TJ, it came out in 2018 and runs about five and a half minutes: the historian walks through a park in a suit.

In late March 2021, according to the same source, a fragment appeared on TikTok set to “Ride It” by Jay Sean, a song that has been popular since 2008. According to Meduza, the clip went mainstream in April. Sources differ on the exact start of the trend, late March or April, so it is more accurate to say spring 2021. The number of clips (TJ cited more than 40 thousand) is an estimate as of publication, not a final tally.

Why the walk reads as an escape

The song's upbeat rhythm does not match the hero's pace: he moves slowly, as if time means nothing to him. The meaning arises from this clash: a person has stepped out to “get some air” and has no worries at all.

So the jokes are built around the duties he left behind: lessons, work, a phone call, cleaning. The music underlines that the decision is final, while the pose and suit make it almost ceremonial.

The encounter with television

On 18 May 2021 Ponasenkov appeared on the talk show Evening Urgant. According to Meduza, in that episode he performed an opera aria and sang “Ride It” in the manner of a romance, and he called the visit triumphant. Shortly before this, Ivan Urgant had performed a parody of the video while walking through a forest.

The hero's own reaction to the meme was brief.

Caption examples

“Me when I said I'd be back in five minutes and an hour has passed.” The contrast between the promise and reality is underlined by the hero's peaceful look.

“The teacher talks about the deadline and I've already walked off into the sunset.” The sunset in the frame makes a trivial reason almost poetic.

“The meeting got moved, so I decided to walk.” The caption explains why the person looks so content.

“Planned to clean, but the park is especially beautiful today.” A joke about putting things off, disguised as love of nature.

Where the joke stops working

The meme suits light everyday situations. It is best not to attribute real actions or beliefs to the hero through a caption: the joke about the walk concerns the figure in the frame, not his biography.

The “duty / escape” rhythm works best. If a caption drifts into complicated politics or other people's dramas, the main source of the humor disappears: lightness.
