Fat Cat Viktor vs. “Aeroflot”

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Fat Cat Viktor vs. “Aeroflot”

What this meme means

A gray striped cat named Viktor in a carrier, with a glass of champagne in the foreground — a frame from a 2019 story in which the owner “swapped” the cat at check-in to get past a weight limit. Later the airline, reportedly, stripped the passenger of his bonus miles. The story is remembered as a joke about strict rules and resourcefulness.

What is in the photo

The photo shows a cat with yellow-green eyes and gray-brown striped fur peeking out of a dark fabric carrier with mesh walls. He looks straight into the lens and seems a little wary. In the foreground is a tall glass of sparkling drink, and behind it a fragment of the cabin is visible. This is not a red cat, as is sometimes retold, but a gray tabby: the color of the fur is clearly visible in the photo.

The glass and the soft armchair next to it create a contrast: the cat seems to be flying business class himself and calmly watching everything.

The November 2019 story

According to media reports, in mid-November 2019 at Sheremetyevo airport a passenger of the airline Aeroflot was flying with a cat named Viktor. Staff judged that the animal weighed more than allowed to be carried in the cabin. The figures vary somewhat between publications, but it was clearly a case of exceeding the limit.

The passenger refused to check the cat as baggage. As he himself told it, another, lighter cat was used for the weigh-in, and then Viktor was returned to the carrier. The passenger described the details on social media, and the story quickly spread through the news.

After the post, the airline, reportedly, excluded the passenger from its loyalty program and cancelled his accumulated miles. The decision was discussed very heatedly: some considered the punishment harsh, others considered it fair for deceiving at check-in.

Why the joke caught on

The story brought together several familiar motifs at once: a big fluffy hero, formal rules, a resourceful owner and bureaucracy. Viktor did nothing special: he just sat in his carrier, but his size and calm gaze became the main hallmark of the plot.

The photo with the glass became a meme in its own right. The cat looks as if he knows what is going on and is not going to explain anything. It is a perfect reaction for situations where someone cleverly got around a rule and now pretends that everything is fine.

Examples for your own caption

“When the contract says ‘no more than eight kilograms,’ and you have nine and a half” — the joke is built on a small excess that you want to slip past unnoticed.

“I'm at work after handing in the report one minute before the deadline” — the cat's calm gaze turns a dubious success into a small victory.

“The limit on sweets is one candy, and I'm walking out with a bag” — a play on the scale of the violation and the hero's imperturbability.

“When the password worked only on the tenth try, and you pretend that was the plan all along” — the template easily applies to any “got through, but with difficulty.”

How to use the photo

The picture works best in captions about cunning and composure, rather than about a real conflict with a company: the story itself has picked up a lot of disputes, and in memes it is better to present it gently. There is no need to mention real people — the image of the cat is enough.

Remember that the cat in the frame is not suffering and does not evoke pity: he has a calm gaze and a comfortable spot. So captions where he is the main observer of the situation work better than ones where he is a victim.
