Stepan the Cat (Kot Stepan)

What the image shows

The picture is made of two frames. On the left, a gray-brown striped cat sits at a table with a glass of red wine and a red dessert in front of it; a red rose stands nearby. On the right is the same cat with a martini glass containing olives and a yellow-orange dessert; a vase is beside it. Blue, purple and yellow light spots are scattered across the wall, as at a club or a party.

The cat’s eyes are angled to the side, the lids are heavy, and the face expresses joyless resignation. The combination of the festive setting and that face is what creates the effect.

The owners and how the videos appeared

Stepan is a Ukrainian cat. According to a Belarusian tech and internet publication, he was filmed by his owner, a TikToker with the handle Annaolala. In summer 2021, clips of the cat sitting by a drink to pop and chanson music began to gain popularity on Russian-language social media. By November 2021 her account had more than 960,000 followers, and a photo of the cat on English-language Twitter got hundreds of thousands of likes, after which Stepan began to appear in foreign memes.

Novaya Gazeta later reported that the cat lived in Kharkiv and that in spring 2022 the account went quiet for a while. Then a post announcing that they were alive appeared, with an addition saying that the cat and his owners had reached France. According to the same source, one of the videos got almost 8 million likes.

What the meme means

Stepan became an image of a person who ended up at a party in no mood for it. Music, lights and drinks surround him, and nothing in him responds. It is not anger or resentment but quiet fatigue, which is easy to convey without words.

It also matters that the cat is not demonstratively bored: he sits upright, like a guest who is present out of politeness. That is what evokes sympathy and keeps the joke kind.

Caption ideas

“I was invited to celebrate a promotion, just not mine”: the celebration belongs to someone else, and the cat gives away the mood.

“Everyone is dancing, and I’m checking what time the last bus leaves”: a contrast between fun and practical worry.

“When it’s the third toast to health and you just wanted to go home”: a short scene in which the guest is forced to take part.

“A work party where they promised only tea”: the caption plays on the glass in the frame and the mismatch with expectations.

Captions about forced participation work best: the cat clearly looks like someone who came out of obligation.

Tips

The left and right frames can be used together or separately. The paired version works well for a joke like “first wine, then cocktails, and the mood is the same.” Don’t invent real motives for the cat: the photo only shows the facial expression, not the reasons.

Why cats suit mood memes

A cat’s face does not change on command, so viewers read into it whatever they want to see. Stepan’s naturally neutral gaze from under heavy lids reads as fatigue, and everyone recognizes their own state in it. The festive props (the glass, the dessert, the flower, the colored light spots) heighten the contrast: the frame promises fun, and the face does not confirm it.

That is why jokes about Stepan are rarely mean. This is sympathy in meme form: the caption says “I’ve felt this way too,” not “look how funny he is.”
