I Have Never in My Life Met This Guy

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

I Have Never in My Life Met This Guy

What this meme means

A frame of Loki from the film 'Thor: Ragnarok,' in which the character smiles with a barely noticeable sly look. The phrase 'I have never in my life met this guy' became a reaction to feigned unfamiliarity and deliberate ignoring.

What is visible in the frame

A close-up of a man with long dark hair that falls onto his shoulders and slightly shines. He smiles at the corners of his mouth, eyes slightly narrowed, looking a little away from the camera. He wears dark leather armor with gold trim at the collar and a chevron emblem on his chest; behind him, blurred blue-violet panels with metallic highlights are visible.

There is no text in the picture: no caption, no phrase. The line exists separately from the image, so the frame and the phrase are often confused. The character's name is Loki, and in the film 'Thor: Ragnarok' the role was played by Tom Hiddleston; this is known from the film's credits, not from the appearance in the frame.

The scene the phrase grew from

The phrase is tied to the film 'Thor: Ragnarok,' released in 2017. In the scene Loki denies knowing Thor, and this very line turned into a meme formula. The exact timecode of the scene is unknown, and the frame may not belong to it: in it Loki simply smiles, with no caption.

The spread of the formula is dated to November 2, 2017: that is when a GIF of this moment appeared in a Tumblr blog. The post gathered more than 300 notes in under two years. An earlier use has not been established, so this post cannot be called the very first.

How the reaction changes from situation to situation

The phrase became a universal reaction to being ignored: a person you know pretends not to know you. It is used in messages when someone conspicuously fails to notice an acquaintance who made an awkward move, or when recalling shared matters is uncomfortable. Importantly, the line does not deny the acquaintance in the literal sense but demonstrates a refusal to acknowledge it.

Over time it was applied to all sorts of situations, and the mechanism is always the same. That is why the Loki frame remains a convenient picture for a caption: the smile already hints at the game, and there is no need to explain what is being played out.

Examples of captions

The examples below are invented for this meme and are not anyone else's quotations:

'A colleague came over to say hi, and I remembered we haven't known each other for ages.' The gap between a polite opening and a deliberate refusal works: the reader sees right away that the unfamiliarity is staged.

'A neighbor asks for the lawn mower I borrowed in May, and I look at him like a random passerby.' The joke rests on an everyday detail: the hero's smile looks like a graceful way out of a debt.

'Wi-Fi password? I don't know this person.' An example without people, but with the same logic: refusing to acknowledge a connection to something that has suddenly become inconvenient.

'An old acquaintance invites me to a class reunion, and I've already forgotten we were in the same class.' Here the laugh comes from the mismatch between a solemn refusal and an ordinary invitation.

Why it is funny

The laugh comes from the contrast between the pompous certainty of the refusal and the obviousness of the connection. The face in the frame is calm and content, which makes the refusal almost ceremonial. The joke is not about anger but about how a person looks when trying not to admit something awkward.

The caption works as a check: if the situation is clear at a glance, the text can be cut to a couple of words, and the reaction only gains from it.
