Sunset and three words
The picture shows a sea with choppy waves, above it a wide sky with dark clouds and a pink-red glow at the horizon. In the middle, in light-colored letters, is written 'I'm in the moment.' This is the artwork for the song's video: there are no people and no other text.
The image itself conveys the same mood the song creates: a warm evening, a pause, the feeling of being present right here, right now.
The song and its dates
According to information about the track, the song by Eldar Jarahov and Markul came out on June 4, 2021, and quickly landed on major streaming charts. By July 13 it had received platinum certification. Jarahov is known as a video blogger and music artist, while Markul is a rapper who began his career in London before later relocating to St. Petersburg.
The title is a colloquial phrase used to describe the state of a person living 'now' and not thinking about tomorrow. A line from the chorus grew into a stand-alone phrase.
From hit to overplayed meme
In the summer of 2021, the song was used in video edits, parodies, and compilations of funny moments. Because of this it quickly wore out its welcome with part of the audience: jokes appeared about wanting the track removed from recommendations, and in August it was reported that Jarahov planned to pull the song from streaming platforms.
After that, a version called 'I'm in the Moment 2' came out with singer Mary Gu and slightly altered lyrics, but the original ended up staying online. Why the original remained on the platforms isn't explained in detail, so this episode is best described briefly.
Two meanings of the phrase
The first meaning is literal: a person enjoying what's happening. The second is an ironic response to a situation that's falling apart while the person acts as if everything's fine. It's this second meaning that let the phrase live on separately from the song.
The earnestness of the performance and the beautiful sunset create a contrast with mundane captions, and that's the main trick at play. The ironic reading likely emerged because the phrase was heard too often: from sheer repetition it started to sound a little mocking rather than inspiring. This is an observation about how the phrase is perceived, not an established fact.
Example captions
'The deadline was yesterday. I'm in the moment.' The character doesn't panic and simply accepts what's happening. The joke rests on the contrast between the task and the calm.
'Sitting in traffic, waiting for the playlist to end. I'm in the moment.' A boring situation described with a beautiful formula.
'Everyone's posting their day's highlights. I'm in the moment and don't even know what day it is.' A play on the idea that 'the moment' implies forgetfulness.
In all three cases, an everyday annoyance comes first, followed by the upbeat phrase that cancels it out.
How to use the template
The picture works as a reaction to staying calm at an inopportune moment, or as an intro to a video. There's no need for long captions: the phrase is already on the shot, and any extra text is best kept short and placed above it or in a reply.
The contrast is what makes it work: the more dramatic the situation in the text, the funnier the calm sunset becomes. If the situation is already pleasant, the joke falls flat, because there's no contradiction. Another option is to use the shot as a self-deprecating reply to a friend who asks what you're up to: 'nothing, I'm in the moment.'
