What the card shows
The picture shows the silhouette of a person in front of a large dark screen with the Ukrainian inscription "Laskavo prosymo do Chornobaivky", meaning "Welcome to Chornobaivka". It is a staged or digital illustration, not a photograph of a specific military position. The name of the village in Kherson Oblast became widely known because of the repeated combat episodes around the airfield where Russian forces stationed equipment. In the image, the welcome phrase reads as an ironic warning to someone who is once again falling into a familiar dangerous situation.
The airfield and the repeated attacks
In late February 2022, Russian forces took the airport near Chornobaivka. In the following weeks, Ukrainian strikes on the site and on the forces stationed there were discussed many times; Russian units brought equipment back, and it again became a target. Reports of individual attacks and losses were published by Ukrainian officials, and satellite images confirmed destruction and the movement of aircraft. But the number of "hits" depended on what was counted as a separate strike, what data were available and as of what date the count was made.
Why the place name became a meme
Chornobaivka became shorthand for a repeated failure: the event seems to have already happened, but the participants again end up in the same place. Memes compared the airfield to a trap, an endless loop or a game level the enemy returns to after defeat. The Ukrainian audience used it as a symbol of resistance and as mockery of the Russian command. Behind this online form, however, were real hostilities near a populated place and risk to local residents, so the story should not be reduced to a game score.
Examples of transfer
An everyday version might read: "The team scheduled a call again for a time that has already been moved twice. Welcome to Chornobaivka." In a study chat: "Back to the same code error after three fixes." Here the place name denotes the repetition of a familiar scenario, not real military losses. For a general audience, it is better to add an explanation so that the reader understands why the name is used as a metaphor.
Handling numbers and context
The meme tradition sometimes attaches Chornobaivka to quickly changing numbers of attacks and destroyed equipment, but an exact figure needs a date, a counting method and a named source — reports from one side in a war require independent verification, and the photograph itself proves neither a specific hit nor a casualty count. It is better to state the stable fact of repeated attacks and note separately that reported figures varied, since the village's name is not just a game label but a real place whose residents lived through occupation and hostilities.
The residents of Chornobaivka lived through occupation and the proximity of a military airfield, rather than merely watching an argument over figures on social media. Journalists' accounts from residents describe damage, evacuation and the disruption of ordinary life. The meme story should not turn the place and its people into a backdrop for a joke. If you use the place name as an everyday metaphor, a brief note about the origin of the metaphor helps preserve an understanding of the human context.
Figures on losses and sorties from open reports should be treated as claims by the respective party unless there is independent verification of the specific episode.
