What's shown in the image
The close-up photo shows a snowshoe cat: a white face with brown-gray patches on the forehead and around the eyes, a pink nose, and large light-colored eyes. The most striking feature is the facial expression: the corners of the mouth turn downward, the patch-like "eyebrows" look furrowed, and the gaze is fixed straight at the camera. The overall impression is of an animal unhappy with everything going on.
The background is typical of a casual home photo: jeans and someone's hand holding the cat are visible. This everyday setting adds to the comic effect. The photo wasn't staged, and that very naturalness is what mattered: viewers took it as the animal's genuine reaction rather than the result of editing.
Backstory
Tardar Sauce was born on April 4, 2012, in the town of Morristown, Arizona. Her owner was Tabatha Bundesen. Photos of the cat first appeared on Reddit on September 23, 2012, when the owner's brother posted them in the subreddit r/pics. The post quickly gained tens of thousands of upvotes and made it to the site's front page.
Within a few hours, the pictures had spread to Imgur and blogs. Users started making captioned images, and hundreds of templates appeared on meme sites. The nickname Grumpy Cat took hold in place of her real name and became the default.
Commercial success
In the fall of 2012, the first T-shirts featuring the cat appeared, and in 2013 the book "Grumpy Cat: A Grumpy Book" was published, quickly taking the top spot in Amazon's humor category. That same year, the cat food brand Friskies named the cat its official spokescat. The popularity also led to talk of a film and comics featuring the character.
The cat turned into a media personality with her own brand and participation in advertising campaigns. Her owners explained that the animal looked grumpy because of the structure of her face, while her actual temperament was calm. In May 2019, Tardar Sauce died at the age of seven, and the news received wide coverage in the media and among fans.
How the meme is used
A typical caption is a short gloomy phrase that subverts expectations. For example, the famous "I Had Fun Once, IT WAS AWFUL." The image works as a comment on an everyday situation: everyone understands that the cat is expressing what a person feels but doesn't dare say out loud.
Pictures of the cat are often used to convey boredom, exhaustion, dissatisfaction with work, or yet another glitch. There were also versions with an altered expression: a smile or a smirk was added, flipping the joke so the cat appeared pleased. Such reworkings showed the format's flexibility.
Why the meme struck such a chord
The main reason is the contrast between appearance and temperament. The cat's face looks angry and disappointed, even though the animal was quite mild-mannered, so any caption takes on irony. Viewers recognize their own mood in the cat and laugh at it without feeling awkward.
Its resemblance to gruff comedic characters, to whom the cat was often compared, also played a role. Among them were Ron Swanson from "Parks and Recreation" and Dwight Schrute from "The Office." Such comparisons worked as an extra joke and helped the meme take hold in different communities.
