Marmot Yelling at a Fox

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Marmot Yelling at a Fox

What this meme means

A photo titled “The Moment” by Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao: a Tibetan fox in mid-leap and a marmot frozen on its hind legs with its limbs spread and its mouth open. In memes the marmot is “yelling” from surprise, and the shot is used for captions about sudden fright, unwelcome news, and running into a problem you were not ready for.

What's in the frame

Two figures on green grass with stones, against a blurred background. On the left is a fox with sandy fur: it is pressed low to the ground, one paw raised, its jaws slightly open with teeth visible. This is the motion of a lunge, not a cautious step. On the right, the marmot has risen almost vertically, its clawed paws spread wide, its mouth open, its head thrown back.

It is precisely this pose that makes the shot convenient for jokes. The marmot looks like a person who has thrown up their hands and cried out: “What?!” The expression is read instantly, and the caption is almost unnecessary.

Where the photo comes from

The photograph is called “The Moment.” It was taken by the Chinese photographer Yongqing Bao on the Tibetan Plateau, at an altitude of roughly 4.5 kilometers. In 2019 this image won the top prize of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest, run by the Natural History Museum in London. The jury noted the rarity of the shot: it captured two species that are important to the ecosystem of high-altitude meadows.

The serious version of the scene is far from funny: according to reports, the attack succeeded and the marmot did not survive. The meme leaves this side aside, and it is worth remembering when choosing a caption: it is better to joke about fright and awkwardness than about the real death of an animal.

The exact date of the first jokes using this photo has not been established. After the award in autumn 2019, the picture spread through the news and social media, and it became the basis for captions at that time.

How the joke reads

The marmot does not attack or “fight back.” It is frightened, and the meme exploits exactly that emotion: a sharp, comic panic at the moment something has suddenly pounced on a person, rather than a composed threat in return. The fox in the role of the “problem” can be anything that descends without warning: a deadline, a call from the boss, a message reading “we need to talk,” a utilities bill.

The division of roles is simple and needs no explanation. The fox on the left stands for what is approaching, and the marmot on the right stands for you at the moment you find out about it. For a caption, it is enough to label both figures or to limit yourself to one phrase about the marmot, without naming the fox at all.

Caption examples

“Me when a letter arrives at 9:01 saying ‘Please come see me for a minute’”: the word “minute” works as the approaching fox, and the marmot as the recipient's reaction. “Deadline (left) and me (right)”: the caption labels the figures and explains nothing. “Me after hearing ‘there will be an unannounced check today’”: the panic comes not from the check itself but from its suddenness. “My silence all weekend and then a message in the work chat”: an everyday version where the fox looks like a work messenger.

How to use it

Short captions about suddenness work well. The “him and me” format works well too, with the threat captioned on the left and the reaction on the right. Don't use the photo for jokes about real tragedies or as an illustration of violence: the shot reflects the death of an animal in nature.

If you want a lighter tone, play not on the predator but on the marmot's pose: the spread paws and the “gasping” open mouth are perfect for scenes of surprise over nothing, for example when everyone in the chat suddenly starts talking about your vacation.
