A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

Reset

What this meme means

A man in a dark suit looks straight ahead, with a can of non-alcoholic “Baltika 0” beer in front of his mouth. A 2020 meme that plays on the word “obnulenie” (“reset”), which entered everyday use during the disputes over amendments to the Constitution: the zero on the can and the zero in politics came together in one picture.

What is actually visible

The frame is a processed photograph. A man in a dark blue suit and white shirt sits behind a wooden barrier; a ring is visible on his finger and a watch on his wrist. His face is positioned right above the neck of the can, and his eyes look at the camera slightly from under his brows. In the foreground a white can labeled “Baltika” with a large 0 on a blue circle has been inserted. Small English text describes the drink as a non-alcoholic light lager.

Other participants in the scene are cropped out: behind him part of a sleeve and a red tie are visible. This suggests the original photo was taken at some session, and the can was added later. This matters: the picture says nothing about whether the man actually drinks or has ever drunk, and the whole scene is a photomontage.

The word “reset” and its context

In March 2020, at a session of the State Duma, deputy Valentina Tereshkova proposed an amendment that would allow the count of presidential terms already served to be reset to zero. The word “reset” quickly became the centerpiece of the debate. The nationwide vote on the amendments took place from June 25 to July 1, 2020; according to official data, about 78 percent of participants voted for the changes, with turnout of around 68 percent.

For the internet this was a gift: the word is visual, and the digit 0 easily evokes a picture. Dozens of jokes about “zero,” “resetting the counter” and “rebooting” appeared around the topic. Individual pictures were collected into compilations, and the meme with the can became one of them.

How the visual joke works

The can is called “Baltika 0”: the brand has a non-alcoholic version, and the zero in the name became a wordplay. This creates a double meaning: a drink with zero percent alcohol and a political term. The serious look of the hero adds further irony, as if he were solemnly giving a toast.

The meme relies on recognition: the viewer assembles the zero on the can and the “reset” themselves, and the joke works without any text. Those who use the picture usually either mock the process or simply enjoy puns, so the comments under such posts vary. A good caption adds no judgment; it just highlights the double meaning.

Caption examples

Three invented variants below.

“They say after the reset even beer has gone non-alcoholic.” The caption directly develops the pun and emphasizes the “zero” degree.

“My balance after vacation, my password after three attempts, and this beer: everything got reset.” An everyday version where the word is moved to private situations.

“Starting Monday with a clean slate.” The caption does not mention politics, but the zero on the can suggests the second reading.

How to use the picture

This is political satire, and it lives by precise words. The caption is best kept short, and the zero on the can should remain legible, so the text should not be placed over the lower part of the frame. Puns on “reset” also work outside politics: resetting settings, New Year, starting a diet.

Do not attribute harmful habits or specific actions to the man in the frame: the photo is edited, and facts about a real person must be checked separately. Opinions about politics are best phrased as the meme author's own view rather than as a claim about what actually happened.
