A Snail Walks Into a Bar

A FAMILIAR MEME. A NEW CONTEXT.

A Snail Walks Into a Bar

What this meme means

A series of jokes about a snail entering a bar: an old joke built on wordplay and delay that became a trend of videos and images in 2021. It includes a demotivator poster of a snail on a green stem with a parody caption.

What's shown in the image

Here's a demotivator poster: a black frame around a photo of a snail crawling along a green stem against a blurred, pale-green background. The shell is brown, the tentacles are raised. Below the photo is a large line reading "So a snail walks into" followed by "a bar," and between them, in small type, is an emotional aside full of swear words that isn't quoted in the article.

In other words, this isn't an original photo from some video but a homemade parody image spoofing the joke: the setup line is interrupted by the aside, which is itself a joke about how slowly a snail "walks in."

The joke: where it comes from

The story of the snail in a bar has been around for a long time. Etymologist Barry Popik found a bar-less version of it in English-language discussions from the early 1990s, and a version involving a bar in a post from 1997. In the classic form, the snail is thrown out, and a year later it comes back and asks why it was treated that way.

A different version is common in Russian: the bartender refuses to serve the snail, and when it comes back, it asks how it even got in in the first place, since it has no legs. No source has been pinpointed, so it's impossible to say which version came first in Russian.

The 2021 trend

In the spring of 2021, the joke spread across TikTok and YouTube. There's no independent confirmation of the first video or of who started the format: all that's out there are discussions and compilations of the joke, with no precise starting point.

The format's essence is that the narrator drags out the pause, shows the bar and the snail, and then delivers a sharp line. The sheer length of the delay creates the comedy on its own: the viewer is waiting for the punchline, and the longer the wait, the stronger the release.

Why it's funny

Several mechanisms are at work. One is the contrast between the slowest creature alive and a place where fast service is expected. Another is delayed revenge: the snail hasn't forgotten anything, it simply comes back at an interval of a year or a week. A third is absurd logic: the viewer understands none of this is realistic, but within the joke's own rules, it all follows.

Example captions

The captions were invented for this card.

"Replying to an email that arrived in 2023." The snail is an allegory for a belated response.

"My delivery: the courier texted 'almost there' an hour and a half ago — and apparently decided to reenact the famous bar joke first." Time here doesn't just drag, it literally stops, like the snail that's in no hurry to either walk in or walk out.

"So a snail walks into a bar — and still hasn't ordered." The caption makes the joke its own punchline: the lack of an ending is the whole point.

"My vacation plan: I'll start Monday" — and that Monday has now been going on for three months straight. The joke here isn't the pause itself, but the fact that the person has long since stopped noticing it, just like a snail that doesn't keep track of how much time has passed.

How to use it

It suits anything that happens too slowly, with a delay, or at the very last second. Captions that reference time rather than the joke itself work best, so the meme reads even for people who haven't heard the original joke.

Replace the profanity from the original image with something neutral: the joke runs on anticipation, not on crudeness.

If you want to make your own demotivator, keep the snail photo in the dark frame and break up the setup line with a short aside — that preserves the recognizable rhythm. For video, a long pause before the final line is enough, since the pause itself is the main tool of the joke.
